A method for the construction of open approximate models from vector time series Preface PhD research is a largely open proces in which a stimulating environment plays a crucial role. I am indebted to several people and institutions that shaped such an environment for me during the years since April 1990. First and for all, I would like to thank my supervisor, Christiaan Heij. He set me on the right track with the PhD project 'Dynamical aspects of time series models; a system theoretic approach': it is indeed what this thesis is about. His continuous support, his careful reading and correcting of my writings and his clear thoughts on the subject were of invaluable interest. The sometimes long discussions formed an important ingredient of the pleasant side of doing research. I thank my promotors, Teun Kloek and Jan Willems, for their accurate reading of the manuscript and the numerous suggestions for improvement, each from their own viewpoint. Jan's courses on systems theory 'from the behavioural point of view' once made me choose for a specialization in that direction as a graduate student, and I have never regretted it. I also thank the members of the scientific comittee, Bernard Hanzon, Harm Bart and Herman van Dijk, for their interesting comments. The courses at the Dutch Systems and Control Theory Network, the stimulating conferences of the European SCIENCE project on System Identification, and their financial support have been of great value for my research. Thanks also go to the NWO and the Royal Dutch Shell for their financial contribution for visiting conferences. My colleagues at the Econometric Institute and the Tinbergen Institute have contributed substantially through discussions and a friendly atmosphere. I thank them for their positive influence on the daily work. Special acknowledgements are given to my brother Dirk and to my colleague André Lucas for solving all kinds of L a T E Xproblems. I thank Anne-Marie Haas for her linguistic hints on parts of the manuscript. Finally, I would like to thank my family and friends for all those things that are so hard to put into words. They kept me going. This holds in particular for Hannie. I dedicate this book to her, with love.

Global least squares solution of matrix equation $sum_{j=1}^s A_jX_jB_j = E$
In this paper, an iterative method is proposed for solving matrix equation $sum_{j=1}^s A_jX_jB_j = E$. This method is based on the global least squares (GL-LSQR) method for solving the linear system of equations with the multiple right hand sides. For applying the GL-LSQR algorithm to solve the above matrix equation, a new linear operator, its adjoint and a new inner product are dened. It is p...
متن کاملRobust 3D Camera Motion Parameter Estimation for Video Coding
In this paper, we present the estimation method of global motion parameters corresponding to 3D camera motion in the nonstationary noisy situation. Total least squares problem is first formulated to represent the global motion parameters estimation procedure from the noise-corrupted image coordinates. Then, a recursive total least squares (RTLS) algorithm is proposed to estimate 3D camera motio...
متن کاملA Total Least Squares Methodfor Toeplitz
A Newton method to solve total least squares problems for Toeplitz systems of equations is considered. When coupled with a bisection scheme, which is based on an eecient algorithm for factoring Toeplitz matrices, global convergence can be guaranteed. Circulant and approximate factorization preconditioners are proposed to speed convergence when a conjugate gradient method is used to solve linear...
متن کاملAlgorithms for global total least squares modelling of finite multivariable time series
In this paper we present several algorithms related to the global total least squares (GTLS) modelling of multivariable time series observed over a finite time interval. A GTLS model is a linear, time-invariant finite-dimensional system with a behaviour that has minimal Frobenius distance to a given observation. The first algorithm determines this distance. We also give a recursive version of t...
متن کاملParallel variable distribution for total least squares
A novel parallel method for determining an approximate total least squares (TLS) solution is introduced. Based on domain distribution, the global TLS problem is partitioned into several dependent TLS subproblems. A convergent algorithm using the parallel variable distribution technique (Ferris and Mangasarian, 1994) is presented. Numerical results support the development and analysis of the alg...
متن کاملTotal Least Mean Squares Algorithm - Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on
Widrow proposed the least mean squares (LMS) algorithm, which has been extensively applied in adaptive signal processing and adaptive control. The LMS algorithm is based on the minimum mean squares error. On the basis of the total least mean squares error or the minimum Raleigh quotient, we propose the total least mean squares (TLMS) algorithm. The paper gives the statistical analysis for this ...
